Chiltepin (Capsicum annuum variation glabrisculum) can take sun but does best in dappled light or with some shade in the middle of the day. It doesn’t want soggy soil but it will suffer in very dry soil, too. Water and fertilize lightly. In outdoor growing, a relatively inexpensive farm-style (10-10-10) fertilizer will do. For container-grown plants, use only liquid fertilizer or a slow-release, prilled fertilizer such as Osmocote.
The only pest we have seen on Chiltepin in our decades of growing it is leaf-spot fungus. Good air flow and dry leaves are your friends. So, again, is keeping situational awareness. There are many products to deal with fungus, organic and not, but they all recommend preventive treatment when conditions are right for fungus. That is usually in the hottest part of the summer. But we have seen Chiltepin plants shed all their leaves and leaf out again, so even untreated plants with fungus are not likely to be killed by it.
Come see us at our nursery and see what that the Chiltepin is like for yourself!
